Imagine what your life could have been like in the early 1900s.
The year is 1910.
Minnie is 13 years old.
She is holding a basket of bobbins. A doffer replaces the bobbins on looms.
Minnie liked her job as a doffer at Holdsworths Mill, but it was hard work. The machines worked very quickly so you had to watch closely for when the bobbins needed changing.
She really liked all the different colours of thread they were using. The jacquard loom was very complicated, but it could produce beautiful designs in the cloth.
It was fascinating how the cards made the machine lift different warp yarns for each pass of the shuttle. And how fast the shuttle moved – it was almost invisible.
